    Midland Tomorrow to Acquire MMIC

Midland Tomorrow to Acquire MidMichigan Innovation Center

MIDLAND, MI (September 21, 2016) - On October 1, 2016, Midland Tomorrow will absorb MidMichigan Innovation Center (MMIC), in a move designed to provide more efficient support for emerging companies and to grow Midland’s SmartZonesm. MMIC in its current form will be dissolved, but all relevant activities will be continued under Midland Tomorrow.

MMIC is a business incubator, started in 2005, that gives entrepreneurs the resources and network to help turn their great ideas into profitable commercial enterprises. Midland Tomorrow is Midland County’s economic development organization for the past 53 years, whose mission is to enhance the quality of life in the county and all its municipalities through the retention and creation of quality jobs and diversification of the economic base.

Midland Tomorrow operates the SmartZone, a tax capture area within city limits focused on accelerating economic growth by growing and developing the industrial base and supporting high-technology companies in Midland. The SmartZone has three aspects: new business incubation and acceleration, second stage support/economic gardening, and foreign direct investment.

“Leveraging the strengths of both organizations will create one cohesive economic development organization focused on job creation and all aspects of entrepreneurship and growth that companies throughout the region need,” said Midland Business Alliance CEO Bill Allen.

Businesses that currently use the MMIC incubator space at their Austin Street location will remain there at least through the end of 2017, said Allen.

Ken Kousky will be leaving his role as MMIC CEO, but will remain as BlueWater Angels (BWA) president. BWA is the state’s second largest angel investment group, and has had a longstanding relationship with MMIC.

"Ken's six-year service as CEO established MMIC’s reputation throughout the state as a source for finding capital, knowhow and help for entrepreneurs," said MMIC Board Chairman Dave Kepler.

Job Portal Off to Strong Start

Established for Displaced Dow & Corning Employees

Several Hundred Job Openings Listed in Portal Launched by Dow and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation
More than 145 Michigan Employers Join Effort; 450 Open Positions Across the State Now Available

MIDLAND, Mich. – July 25, 2016 – The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, working in cooperation with local economic development corporations including Midland Tomorrow, Saginaw Future, and Bay Future, announced today very strong participation in a state-wide job portal that has been established to help offset the impacts from restructuring measures currently being implemented by Dow. More than 145 Michigan employers have posted 450 open jobs in the portal, with the State of Michigan accounting for close to 300 of these jobs.

The customized online job portal, designed specifically for affected Dow and Dow Corning employees, launched on July 11, 2016. The portal offers Michigan companies an opportunity to post open jobs and search for highly skilled Dow and Dow Corning talent to fill open roles. Employees affected by Dow’s recent restructuring effort are provided log-in details at the time of notification, and create an online profile in the portal to aid in the search and selection process.

“We are very pleased with the response to this online talent matching resource,” said Rich Wells, vice president for Dow’s Michigan Operations. “It is a true testament to the strength of our business community, and the commitment shown by the State of Michigan, to retain these highly skilled talents here in the Great Lakes Bay Region and across the state.”

“I would like to recognize the leadership Dow has shown in this effort,” said Steve Arwood, chief executive offer of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “This is the first time we have created such a customized portal, and it shows the power of the State, the local Economic Development Corporations and the company coming together to help affected employees while strengthening our workforce and talent retention efforts throughout the State of Michigan.”

There is no charge to affected employees or potential employers to access the portal, which is being administered by Midland Tomorrow. Companies interested in learning more about the portal may contact Tracy Gallagher with Midland Tomorrow at gallagher@midlandtomorrow.org or the MEDC talent team at talentassist@michigan.org.

    Midland County Approves PACE Financing

    Helps Businesses Afford Energy-Saving Projects

The Midland County Board of Commissioners today approved Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing, which can help commercial, industrial, multi-family, nonprofit and faith-based property owners implement energy efficiency, water efficiency and renewable energy projects in Midland County. PACE eliminates the need for upfront capital for such projects, making them profitable on either new or existing facilities.

PACE enables cost-saving projects for commercial properties by providing long-term, fixed-interest loans to property owners. Property owners then pay this back via their property taxes, using a completely voluntary special assessment on their property.

Midland Tomorrow will be the lead agency for PACE in Midland County. Property owners interested in finding out more about the program and whether they might qualify should contact them at 989-839-0340.
